Ventral Hernia Surgery
After Hernia Surgery 95% percent of our patients leave home within two hours following their hernia repair.
|
|
Hernia Surgery options include new techniques and materials that can make surgery less invasive and recovery faster. |
|
Approximately 600,000 Hernia Repair Operations are performed annually in the United States. Many are performed by the conventional "open" method. Some hernia repairs are performed using a small telescope known as a laparoscope. Hernias can happen to anyone, regardless of sex or age
Hernias can only
be repaired by a surgical procedure. There are a variety of surgical
procedures available, depending on the type of hernia involved. Careful diagnosis is essential. It’s important to distinguish between Groin Strain, a Torn Muscle or a HERNIA, because the treatment options for each vary greatly. |
|
This type of hernia is the bulge or protrusion that occurs at or near an incision wound prior development. Ventral hernia can also develop due to any prior surgery on the abdomen. After the surgery if an infection develops at the scar, this can lead to ventral hernia.
It develops in a straight line right from the breastbone and can travel right down to the pubis. Heavy straining, injury and aging can also be one of the reasons of this hernia.
Almost 90,000 ventral hernia fixations are carried out in the United States every year. Anyone can get a ventral hernia at any age. |

Ventral hernia can be recognized visually as a protrusion under your skin. The main symptoms are discomfort, strain during urination and bowel movements. Redness may be observed at the incision area. Persistent cough, nausea, vomiting and shortness of breath are the other symptoms of ventral hernia. The person may also experience increased abdominal pain and bleeding. |
|
|
|
|
In ventral hernia, the bulge occurs since the muscles at the scar are weakened and this makes the inner lining push through the abdominal wall. This leads to the formation of a balloon like sac. Due to the development of the sac, some of the abdominal contents or a loop of the intestines can get pushed into the sac. This results in the trapping of these contents and can even lead to strangulation. This could lead to serious problems such as chronic injuries. |

PRECAUTIONS AND TREATMENT |
|
|
Ventral hernia doesn’t go away with time nor does it get cured by itself. It is the most difficult hernia to treat. There are no precautions to avoid this hernia and can be treated only when it develops. Many doctors cure ventral hernia by the conventional ‘open’ method.
However it can also be treated ‘laparoscopically’. In the laparoscopic procedure, the tear or the openings are fixed by using small incisions. This reinforces the abdominal wall. With the laparoscopic method the patient can return to the routine activities quickly and it also ensures less postoperative pain. |

Do hernias get better? |
|
A hernia will not repair itself and there are no treatments involving medication. Typically a
hernia worsens over time until surgery becomes the only option for repair. However, not all
hernias require immediate surgery and in some cases, may not require surgery at all. |
|

How do you fix a hernia? |
|
Hernias
can only be repaired by a surgical procedure. There are a variety of
surgical procedures available, depending on the type of hernia
involved. Careful diagnosis is ssential. It’s important to distinguish
between ' Groin Strain ', a Torn Muscle or a HERNIA, because the
treatment options for each vary greatly. |

|
How do hernia conditions vary? |
|
Inguinal hernias or hernias of the groin are the most common type of hernia. Typically these
hernias develop in adults, generally in men, although they do occur in women as well. The
inguinal hernia occurs when there is a weakness, tear or opening in the muscle wall of the
groin or lower abdomen. Surgical procedures to correct inguinal hernias is done in our center
on an outpatient basis. |

|
When can I resume sexual activity? |
|
Men or women can resume sexual activity when they feel comfortable and free of pain. Age
can effect the overall healing time. Younger men and women seem to experience recovery
faster then older men. |

The Conventional Method. In this case, an incision is made over the site of the hernia. The protruding tissue is returned to the abdominal cavity, and the sac that has formed is removed. The surgeon repairs the
hole or weakness in the abdominal wall by sewing
strong surrounding muscle over the defect. This is the
most common method of hernia repair.
Tension-free Mesh Technique. For this technique, an
incision is made at the site of the hernia and a piece of
mesh is inserted to cover the area of the abdominal wall
defect without sewing together the surrounding
muscles. Recovery is swift, and the likelihood of the
hernia recurring is small. The mesh is safe and
generally well-accepted by the body’s natural tissues.
The Laparoscopic Method. A laparoscope is a long
metal tube with a fiberoptic light source and a telescopic
eyepiece, which is connected to a TV monitor.
The scope is inserted into the abdominal cavity through
a small incision and is used to view the hernia in the
abdominal wall while the surgeon repairs the hernia
through additional tubes that are inserted into the
abdomen through separate incisions. |
