Approximately 600,000 Hernia Repair Operations are performed annually in the United States. Many are performed by the conventional "open" method. Some hernia repairs are performed using a small telescope known as a laparoscope. Hernias can happen to anyone, regardless of sex or age
Hernias can only
be repaired by a surgical procedure. There are a variety of surgical
procedures available, depending on the type of hernia involved. Careful diagnosis is essential. It’s important to distinguish between Groin Strain, a Torn Muscle or a HERNIA, because the treatment options for each vary greatly. |

Umbilical hernia is the outward bulging of a portion of the abdomen through the area surrounding the belly button. Umbilical hernia is most common in infants of African-American descent and is estimated to affect every one out of six infants. However in adults it is common in pregnant women.
Babies are prone to this type of hernia when a malformation occurs during the development of the fetus. It leads to the complete closure of the umbilical ring. Due to this, some of the organs that are supposed to be developed inside the abdominal cavity develop outside the cavity. The organs later return to the cavity through an opening, which forms the umbilicus. The bulge can vary from less than 1 centimeter to 5 centimeter in diameter. |

The main symptom of umbilical hernia is the soft bulging over the umbilicus. This protrusion may appear flat when the child is lying back and quite. However it bulges out when the child is upright, straining or begins to cry. A physical examination can reveal this hernia easily. |

Abdominal pain may develop in infants. This may lead to swelling and discoloration of the hernia. The danger of the child getting affected by peritonitis also persists and the infant may suffer from a shock. The bowel tissues may also get strangulated and the blood supply to those tissues get stopped. However obstruction and strangulation are rare. |

PRECAUTIONS AND TREATMENT |
|
|
For umbilical hernia, there is no precaution. When it develops, no treatment is needed initially. Most umbilical hernias get resolved automatically by three to four years of age.
However if it doesn’t get resolved, then surgery is needed. Many mothers feel that tapping and tying the hernia with a strap will resolve the problem. However this may prove to be dangerous for the child’s health in future and should not be done. |
|
|
Do hernias get better? |
|
A hernia will not repair itself and there are no treatments involving medication. Typically a
hernia worsens over time until surgery becomes the only option for repair. However, not all
hernias require immediate surgery and in some cases, may not require surgery at all. |

Inguinal hernias or hernias of the groin are the most common type of hernia. Typically these
hernias develop in adults, generally in men, although they do occur in women as well. The
inguinal hernia occurs when there is a weakness, tear or opening in the muscle wall of the
groin or lower abdomen. Surgical procedures to correct inguinal hernias is done in our center

faster then older men. |

The Conventional Method. In this case, an incision is made over the site of the hernia. The protruding tissue is returned to the abdominal cavity, and the sac that has formed is removed. The surgeon repairs the
hole or weakness in the abdominal wall by sewing
strong surrounding muscle over the defect. This is the
most common method of hernia repair.
Tension-free Mesh Technique. For this technique, an
incision is made at the site of the hernia and a piece of
mesh is inserted to cover the area of the abdominal wall
defect without sewing together the surrounding
muscles. Recovery is swift, and the likelihood of the
hernia recurring is small. The mesh is safe and
generally well-accepted by the body’s natural tissues.
The Laparoscopic Method. A laparoscope is a long
metal tube with a fiberoptic light source and a telescopic
eyepiece, which is connected to a TV monitor.
The scope is inserted into the abdominal cavity through
a small incision and is used to view the hernia in the
abdominal wall while the surgeon repairs the hernia
through additional tubes that are inserted into the
abdomen through separate incisions. |
