Approximately 600,000 Hernia Repair Operations are performed annually in the United States. Many are performed by the conventional "open" method. Some hernia repairs are performed using a small telescope known as a laparoscope. Hernias can happen to anyone, regardless of sex or age
Hernias can only
be repaired by a surgical procedure. There are a variety of surgical
procedures available, depending on the type of hernia involved. Careful diagnosis is essential. It’s important to distinguish between Groin Strain, a Torn Muscle or a HERNIA, because the treatment options for each vary greatly. |
|
Stomas create a weak site in the abdomen making a person more vulnerable to the hernia. Generally the abdominal wall muscles around the stoma form a snug fit, but sometimes these muscles come away from the edges, creating a hernia. This opening can lead to any type of hernia involving inguinal hernia. |

This is a gradual phenomenon. The area next to the opening becomes weak gradually and is prone to any type of injury. It means that any time if a person sneezes, coughs or lifts a heavy object he is inviting the protrudition of the stoma opening to be pushed by the rest of the abdomen. This leads to the swelling in the abdomen. One also experiences pain and inflammation in the affected area. |

The size of the hernia increases with the time. It spreads along the lower abdomen and is more likely to catch the scortum in very short span of time. It is not much painful to the victim but creates a lot of inconvenience to him. They can be seen beneath the clothes and their size brings much inconvenience and embarrassment in the public. There is a minor chance of getting the intestine trapped within the bulge and result in the obstruction of blood flow. This is extremely painful and requires the immediate untwisting of the intestine from the bulge. Regardless of the pain factor proper care must be taken. |

Do hernias get better? |
|
A hernia will not repair itself and there are no treatments involving medication. Typically a
hernia worsens over time until surgery becomes the only option for repair. However, not all
hernias require immediate surgery and in some cases, may not require surgery at all. |

|
Inguinal hernias or hernias of the groin are the most common type of hernia. Typically these
hernias develop in adults, generally in men, although they do occur in women as well. The
inguinal hernia occurs when there is a weakness, tear or opening in the muscle wall of the
groin or lower abdomen. Surgical procedures to correct inguinal hernias is done in our center

The Conventional Method. In this case, an incision is made over the site of the hernia. The protruding tissue is returned to the abdominal cavity, and the sac that has formed is removed. The surgeon repairs the
hole or weakness in the abdominal wall by sewing
strong surrounding muscle over the defect. This is the
most common method of hernia repair.
Tension-free Mesh Technique. For this technique, an
incision is made at the site of the hernia and a piece of
mesh is inserted to cover the area of the abdominal wall
defect without sewing together the surrounding
muscles. Recovery is swift, and the likelihood of the
hernia recurring is small. The mesh is safe and
generally well-accepted by the body’s natural tissues.
The Laparoscopic Method. A laparoscope is a long
metal tube with a fiberoptic light source and a telescopic
eyepiece, which is connected to a TV monitor.
The scope is inserted into the abdominal cavity through
a small incision and is used to view the hernia in the
abdominal wall while the surgeon repairs the hernia
through additional tubes that are inserted into the
abdomen through separate incisions. |
