Approximately 600,000 Hernia Repair Operations are performed annually in the United States. Many are performed by the conventional "open" method. Some hernia repairs are performed using a small telescope known as a laparoscope. Hernias can happen to anyone, regardless of sex or age
Hernias can only
be repaired by a surgical procedure. There are a variety of surgical
procedures available, depending on the type of hernia involved. Careful diagnosis is essential. It’s important to distinguish between Groin Strain, a Torn Muscle or a HERNIA, because the treatment options for each vary greatly. |
|
Incisions create a weak site in the abdomen making a person more vulnerable to the hernia. Generally the abdominal wall muscles around the stoma form a snug fit, but sometimes these muscles come away from the edges, creating a hernia. This opening can lead to any type of hernia involving inguinal hernia. |

It occurs because of weak spots in lower abdominal wall and in men the weak spot is usually along the inguinal canal. The area contains spermatic cord that contains vas deferens, which carries sperm to the scrotum. In women it occurs where connective tissue from the uterus attaches to the pubic bone. |

Usually it is not noticeable until the doctor is consulted. In children it does not occur due to strain by crying, however due to increased pressure in abdomen it gets noticed. It comes into picture when the swelling around the groin can be seen. Some of the important symptoms are a full, round abdomen, inflammation and a tendency of vomiting. One can also develop pain and fussiness and can see redness around the infected area. |

It results in pain and swelling of the scrotum area. It may obstruct the bowel, which leads to nausea, severe pain and inability of the bowel movement. It also leads to strangulation. It means the diminishing of blood flow to the affected areas, which leads to the death of the affected tissues. This may be fatal to the victim and requires an immediate surgery. |

PRECAUTIONS AND TREATMENT |
|
|
Surgery is the immediate solution to the complication. There are two different types of general surgery- Herniorrhaphy and hernioplasty. One requires an incision in the groin and other a synthetic patch up over the affected area. |

|
Do hernias get better? |
|
A hernia will not repair itself and there are no treatments involving medication. Typically a
hernia worsens over time until surgery becomes the only option for repair. However, not all
hernias require immediate surgery and in some cases, may not require surgery at all. |

|
Inguinal hernias or hernias of the groin are the most common type of hernia. Typically these
hernias develop in adults, generally in men, although they do occur in women as well. The
inguinal hernia occurs when there is a weakness, tear or opening in the muscle wall of the
groin or lower abdomen. Surgical procedures to correct inguinal hernias is done in our center
on an outpatient basis. |

The Conventional Method. In this case, an incision is made over the site of the hernia. The protruding tissue is returned to the abdominal cavity, and the sac that has formed is removed. The surgeon repairs the
hole or weakness in the abdominal wall by sewing
strong surrounding muscle over the defect. This is the
most common method of hernia repair.
Tension-free Mesh Technique. For this technique, an
incision is made at the site of the hernia and a piece of
mesh is inserted to cover the area of the abdominal wall
defect without sewing together the surrounding
muscles. Recovery is swift, and the likelihood of the
hernia recurring is small. The mesh is safe and
generally well-accepted by the body’s natural tissues.
The Laparoscopic Method. A laparoscope is a long
metal tube with a fiberoptic light source and a telescopic
eyepiece, which is connected to a TV monitor.
The scope is inserted into the abdominal cavity through
a small incision and is used to view the hernia in the
abdominal wall while the surgeon repairs the hernia
through additional tubes that are inserted into the
abdomen through separate incisions. |
